Manage extensions and themes in Waterfox

Install, update, disable, and remove Waterfox extensions and themes.

Extensions add features to Waterfox. Themes change its appearance. Open about:addons in the address bar to manage both in the Add-ons Manager.

Install an extension or theme

Browse addons.mozilla.org and open the page for the extension or theme you want. Choose Add to Waterfox, review any requested permissions, and confirm the installation. Some pages may use Add to Firefox as the button label.

To install an extension supplied as an .xpi file, open the Add-ons Manager’s tools menu and choose Install Add-on From File…. Select the file, review the installation prompt, and confirm. Install files from an author or project you trust.

Waterfox supports unsigned and legacy extensions. Read Unsigned extensions in Waterfox if the installation prompt says an extension cannot be verified.

Disable or remove an extension

  1. Open about:addons and select Extensions.
  2. Use the extension’s toggle to enable or disable it.
  3. To uninstall it, open its three-dot menu and choose Remove.

Select Themes to enable a different theme or remove one you installed. Restart Waterfox if the Add-ons Manager asks you to.

Update extensions

Open the Add-ons Manager’s tools menu and choose Check for Updates. Extensions installed directly from an author’s website may use that author’s update service. Check the author’s instructions if an update is unavailable or an extension stops working after a browser update.

Manage permissions

Open an extension’s details to review its permissions and available controls. Private Browsing access is managed separately; see Manage Waterfox extensions in Private Browsing.

If an extension causes problems, disable it and check whether the problem stops. The extension’s details include links to its author or support page when the author provides them.
