Recommendations as you browse
Waterfox has two settings that control whether the browser suggests extensions or features while you browse. Both are found under Tabs and browsing.
Change the settings
- Click the menu button, then select Settings.
- Select Tabs and browsing.
- Scroll to the Recommendations section.
- Recommend extensions as you browse — suggests an extension when you visit a site it is relevant to.
- Recommend features as you browse — points out browser features you have not used.
Clear either checkbox to stop the corresponding suggestions.
What Waterfox does not do here
In Firefox these suggestions are delivered by a remote messaging system, and the extension recommendations can be personalized using a profile of your browsing.
Neither applies in Waterfox:
- No remote messaging. The message providers that fetch recommendation campaigns over the network are set to empty and locked. We cannot push a message, a promotion or a recommendation to your browser.
- No personalized recommendations. Building a recommendation profile from your browsing requires sending data about it. That is switched off and locked, and the control for it does not appear in Settings.
- No sponsored placements. Nothing in this section is paid for.
Anything these settings still surface is decided locally, from what is already on your machine.
Finding extensions yourself
Browse addons.mozilla.org directly, or open the menu and select Add-ons and themes.
Waterfox does not require extensions to be signed, so you can also install from anywhere else. An extension can see far more of your browsing than the browser itself reports — which is nothing — so weigh what you install accordingly.
