Waterfox performance settings

Waterfox picks performance settings based on your hardware and operating system. The defaults suit most people, but you can override them if you are chasing more speed, lower memory use or better stability.

Change the settings

1. Click the menu button, then select Settings.
2. Select Tabs and browsing.
3. Scroll to the Performance section.
4. Clear Use recommended performance settings to reveal the individual controls.

Hardware acceleration

Lets Waterfox use your graphics processor to render video, animation and page composition, taking load off the CPU.

Turning it off can help with:

• Video playback that flickers, tears or shows artifacts
• High GPU temperature or fan noise while browsing
• Crashes that point at a graphics driver

Restart Waterfox after changing this setting.

Content process limit

Controls how many separate processes Waterfox uses for web content. More processes isolate tabs from each other and keep the browser responsive, at the cost of memory. Fewer processes reduce memory use on machines with limited RAM.

If you do not see these options

• Hardware acceleration is hidden when your graphics driver is on the blocklist for known rendering bugs. Updating the driver may bring the option back.
• On Linux, if you installed Waterfox from your distribution’s package manager rather than the official repositories, some settings may be managed by the system.
