Mozilla's Recommended Extensions program

Extensions add features to Waterfox and change how the browser works. Most extensions are developed by third parties.

Mozilla operates the Recommended Extensions program for extensions distributed through addons.mozilla.org (AMO). It is not a Waterfox program, and Waterfox does not make personalized or in-product extension recommendations. Recommended status means that Mozilla has selected an extension for additional review and monitoring. See Add-on badges for other statuses shown by AMO.

How does Mozilla select Recommended extensions?

Mozilla editorial staff identify extensions for the program. Mozilla’s curators consider the following questions:

• Does the extension work well? Recommended extensions must reliably provide the functionality they promise.
• Is the extension safe? Before an extension receives Recommended status, Mozilla performs a technical review. Mozilla then uses automated checks, monitoring and periodic reviews to maintain the status.
• Does the extension offer a good user experience? Curators look for extensions that are well-designed and easy to manage.
• Is the extension relevant to an international audience? Mozilla selects a limited collection intended to be useful in many regions.
• Is the extension actively developed? Developers must maintain Recommended extensions as browser and user needs change.

Where is Recommended status shown?

Waterfox may also display AMO’s Recommended badge when extension information appears in the Add-ons Manager. The badge reports Mozilla’s program status; it is not a personalized promotion from Waterfox.

Can developers pay to be recommended?

No. Mozilla does not accept payment for Recommended status.

What are the risks of installing other extensions?

Most extensions are created with honest intent, but any extension may contain mistakes or request access to sensitive browser data. A small number of malicious extensions also try to steal data or mislead users.

Mozilla gives Recommended extensions additional technical review under its secure extension policy. An extension without Recommended status is not necessarily unsafe. It means only that Mozilla has not granted that status. Before installing any extension, review its developer, permissions, update history and user feedback.

What are Recommended themes?

Themes change Waterfox’s appearance. A community-led Mozilla team curates Recommended themes for visual quality, resolution and composition.

Can users suggest an extension?

Yes. Mozilla accepts suggestions at amo-featured [at] mozilla [dot] org. Include a link to the extension’s AMO listing.
